Experiential Learning Week
Sembawang Primary School had our annual Experiential Learning Week (ELW) from 27 to 31 March. Lessons were replaced with ELW programmes and activities during curriculum time for that week.
Through the ELW programmes and activities, students were given more opportunities to discover their interests and strengths. They were also able to develop their 21st Century Competencies such as communication, collaboration, knowledge application and independent learning.
In addition to the introduction and restructuring of Project Work at Primary 4 and Primary 5, there are specially designed programmes for the other levels. The activities allow students to make connections with the world around them. The students certainly had a blast as they enjoyed exploring authentic experiences that extended learning beyond textbooks and classrooms.
“I learnt more about our transport system from the SMRT Station Manager and Service Ambassador who came to talk to us their job and responsibilities. I enjoyed the Kahoot quiz during the talk. I was proud of myself and my team members when we presented our project on Gracious Commuting to the lower primary students.”
Mohamed Danial Raiyan Bin Mohamed Abbillah (4 Resilience)
Reading Parents Programme
Reading Parents Programme is an initiative by the English Department to inculcate the habit of reading for pleasure among non-readers.
This is a collaborative effort with Parent Volunteers who introduce and read selected books to these identified students once a week. Fun activities are also conducted during this session to support our struggling readers as they find pleasure in reading.
KidsREAD Club
Since 2022, Sembawang Primary School has been collaborating with the National Library Board (NLB) to conduct a reading programme called KidsRead Club. This programme promotes the love of reading and cultivates good reading habits among young children.
The KidsRead Club is conducted by volunteers trained by NLB and coordinated by our teachers-in-charge from SBPS. Students in this club will be provided with these following materials:
This is the structure of each session:
a. Tuning - in | Each session starts with songs and games as a lead-in to the story time. |
b. Story Time | Volunteer reads to the students |
c. STEAM Activities | Activities related to the story which range from Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics |
d. Independent Reading | Select books to read independently or with volunteers and friends |
Enrichment Classes to Enhance Learning
P3 Readers Theatre 2023
This programme aims to build our primary three students’ agency, confidence and self-esteem through clear articulation, fluency and expression.
Our students worked together with their classmates to put up a Reader’s Theatre performance. They acquired oracy skills to become confident speakers who can express themselves clearly. Students were able to work collaboratively to perform their roles in confidence.
The actors taking on different roles are positioned at different heights with respect to the rest of the class who serve as the chorus.
Authentic Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom
Learning Journey to Singapore Zoo and Science Centre
Primary 1 students on a Learning Journey to the Singapore Zoo.
The students watched a performance by Tiago the Sealion at the Splash Safari Show. After watching the show, they were tasked to do a reflection on their learning experience. They enjoyed themselves at the Zoo.
Primary 2 students went on a Learning Journey to the Science Centre.
There were many interesting exhibitions for the students to try out. At the Science Centre, the students attended a Life in a Shell Programme where they learnt about animals that have shells. They also got to experience touching seashells and interacting with garden snails and hermit crabs.
